It would be difficult, if not impossible, to overstate how far home audio has come since its inception. Starting with wax cylinders, progressing eventually to vinyl, tape, and now compact discs and electronic MP3s, it has now reached the point where the sound quality of music played at home is equal to--and in some cases better than--music heard live. Naturally, the progression of playback equipment has kept pace with the media on which the music is contained.

Although not necessarily a new idea, the advent of music on both disc and computer has made distributed audio systems the cutting-edge home theater option. In the past, a person had a stereo in, say, the living room. Perhaps speaker wire could be run to other rooms in the house, but even then it did not provide for multiple listening options (not to mention the potential messiness of wires running through the house). Distributed audio systems, however, have changed all of that.

Distributed audio systems can allow for different music in many rooms--all at the same time and on one audio system. There is a central audio "hub" which allows music to be simultaneously distributed to any room in the house. These systems can be very simple or very sophisticated depending on a person's needs and budget.
